Dong Zong's Story

NOTHING like this has ever happened in the history of the Chinese education movement.
There have been fist fights, frozen bank accounts, heart attacks, lawsuits and, most embarrassing of all, a terrible loss of face for the Chinese community.
That is the situation in Dong Zong, the Chinese education body that was once the most influential opinion-shaper among the Chinese-educated.
It used to be so powerful that it could bring down Chinese politicians and even ministers. Today it is the laughing stock as the feud between two factions grows more acrimonious.
The Chinese vernacular press devote up to a full page of news daily to the never-ending hostilities. But the power struggle has become so complicated and dragged on for so long that many people have lost hope that there will ever be a solution.
To put it simply, the dispute is between the group aligned to Dong Zong’s most controversial president Yap Sin Tian and the reformist group aligned to the secretary-general Poh Chin Chuan. They are fighting for control of Dong Zong with both sides claiming to have the Chinese interest at heart.
There was supposed to have been light at the end of the tunnel last week when the reformists managed to convene a meeting to elect a new central executive committee (CEC) as ordered by the High Court.
Yap claimed he had a heart attack and did not attend the meeting which was preceded by a free-for-all between supporters of the two camps. Despite the fracas, a new president Tan Kai Kim was elected to replace Yap.

Nazri’s ‘hooligan-style’ remark to TMJ uncalled for

PETALING JAYA: The “hooligan-style” response by Nazri Aziz to Tunku Mahkota of Johor recently has disturbed and bewildered the chairman of the Social Care Foundation, who has called on the minister to repent and apologise immediately for it.
In a statement today, Robert Phang, who is also the Justice of the Peace, said that Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim was merely issuing a gentle reminder about the government having to be responsible to the people and that Nazri’s remark was totally uncalled for.
“It is very clear HRH Brigadier General Tunku Ismail has merely spoken out of concern for the Rakyat,” Phang said, adding that the reply the minister of tourism and culture gave was both “uncivilised and insolent”.
“Enough is enough. As an elected MP (Padang Rengas), I pray to God that Nazri wakes up and has the guts to sincerely apologise to HRH Brigadier General Tunku Ismail.”
Phang also took issue with Nazri’s use of the word “whack” in his reply to Tunku Ismail and said, “I am bewildered by your (Nazri) explanation that the word ‘whack’ was used to protect the monarchy … you are a seasoned politician and a lawyer.
“You could have used a better term or statement, more so against the monarchy. Our Malaysian culture does not allow for such an insolent statement.”
He also told Nazri to “wake up” and “repent” for the harsh statement to prove he was a civilised and cultured elected leader, and added that his harsh words were giving a bad example to the younger generation.
He also heaped praises on Tunku Ismail for defending his right to comment on national issues and for looking out for the people, adding “For this, my humble salutations to you”.
On June 5, Tunku Ismail posted a Facebook message ridiculing Prime Minister Najib Razak on his non-appearance at the Nothing2Hide forum saying that was the reason why the people no longer had trust and confidence in him.
Nazri retaliated by telling the Tunku Ismail to stay out of politics, failing which he would be subject to the same rule and be “whacked”.

'If prince gets whacked, what more rakyat?'

Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim voiced a gentle reminder for those in power, and this earned him a "hooligan-like" response from a minister.

This led former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) advisory panel member Robert Phang to wonder what the rakyat would encounter for questioning ruling politicians.

He also called on Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz (photo) to apologise to the prince if the latter considered himself a "cultured and civilised" member of Parliament.

"It is very clear that Tunku Ismail merely voiced his opinion that those who have been entrusted with the responsibility (to lead) must not blame the people for losing trust and confidence in them, but to think why the people no longer have confidence and trust in them.

"The rakyat totally agree with such a gentle reminder (but) it was met with a hooligan-style response from a minister.

"If Tunku Ismail received such a reply, then what chances do we, the rakyat, have?" he asked in a statement.

More must come forward

Phang (photo), who is chairperson of the Social Care Foundation, commended Tunku Ismail for making a stand.

"Malaysians more so Johoreans must come forward to remind the leaders of the country that they have a responsibility to serve the people respectfully.

"It is clear Tunku Ismail has merely spoken out of concern for the rakyat," he added.

Phang, who said he was "disturbed" by Nazri's reaction, accused the minister of setting a bad example for the younger generation.

"Enough is enough. As an elected MP, I pray Nazri wakes up and has the guts to sincerely apologise to Tunku Ismail," he added.

Phang was also "bewildered" by the minister's explanation that his remarks were intended to protect the royal institution.

"You (Nazri) could have used a better term, more so against the monarchy. Our Malaysian culture does not allow such insolent statements," he said.

Nazri had warned Tunku Ismail that he risked being "whacked" if the prince meddled in politics.

This was after the prince mocked Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for failing to turn up at the 'Nothing to Hide' dialogue.

Nazri has refused to back down, saying he was merely defending the prime minister and reminded the prince, that unlike him, Tunku Ismail was not elected by the people.

YB NAZRI MUST APOLOGIZE TO THE MONARCHY IF YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A CULTURED AND CIVILISED MP
