AG must come clean, says MACC advisor

Attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail has again been urged to respond to allegations that he enjoyed close ties with former Malaysia Airlines chairperson Tajudin Ramli, who is being investigated for graft.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) advisory panel member Robert Phang said that this was crucial because there is evidence of Abdul Gani's ties with Tajudin's aide Shahidan Shafie.

“There is public exposure of Abdul Gani's personal conduct in consorting with Shahidan during a recent Haj pilgrimage. The photographs and documents that have been in the public domain seem very convincing.

“The AG's silence is fuelling suspicion. The AG must answer or the government of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will suffer,” said Phang in a statement today.

“I call on the AG to clear the air once and for all. I call on the MACC to also investigate the truth or otherwise of these public disclosures.”

Case pending since 2002

On Dec 15, MACC's Operations Review Panel chairperson Hadenan Abdul Jalil had revealed that investigations on Tajudin, initiated in 2002, were still ongoing.

Tajudin is believed to be probed over the purchase of the MasKargo facility in Hahn, Germany, which resulted in huge losses for the national carrier.

In 2002, MAS lodged its first in a series of police reports against Tajudin, its executive chairman from 1994 to 2001, for causing the national carrier to suffer losses of more than RM8 billion.

This prompted a two-pronged investigation by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department of the police and by MACC.

Hadenan denied that the investigations have ceased, adding that “new evidence” has cropped up and is currently being probed.

“Allegations that the MACC is not investigating are baseless as new evidence has emerged and the MACC is looking into it,” he said.

However, Hadenan refused to comment on whether the new evidence was related to allegations made in several blogs recently.
