Maria Chin according to news report is being held under the new law SOSMA, which among other allows for the extended detention period of 28 days for security offences under Section 124C.
Her arrest took place just before the day, she was to lead the Bersih 5 rally on the 19th of November, which saw a turnout of more than 40K Bersih supporters as well as a few Red Shirts counter demonstrators.
Several groups including NGOs have questioned the move in particular the use of what is meant to be an anti-terrorist law against a leader of a pre-democracy rally.
Bearing in mind, the ugly scenes have been transmitted all over the world by the media. Maria is known to be a human rights activist and not a terrorist.
She leads a group merely seeking reforms of the current electoral system of Malaysia – free clean election.
As such the Rakyat inevitably affirm that this action should not be detrimental to, or undermine parliamentary democracy. On the contrary, it strengthens parliamentary democracy, said the Society for the Promotion of Human Rights (Proham) Malaysia in a statement yesterday.
We Malaysian, will al pray for a quick solution to guide us back to the correct democracy path.
