MACC: Don't report cases under investigation

KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is asking for media cooperation not to report on cases being investigated. Its chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed said many of the media were presently carrying reports on ongoing case investigations."I understand the needs of the media but they must also understand the MACC's work.

"This is because the success of our investigation into any case depends on confidentiality so that we can get good information if what we're doing is not publicly known."Publicity on an ongoing investigation, to me, is not good and appropriate or timely...in fact we wouldn't know what will happen to those being investigated as it will depend on the statements given," he told reporters on Friday.

UKM vice-chancellor Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin signed the MoA on behalf of the university. On the Master's programme, Abu Kassim said it started three years ago and had produced the first batch of nine graduates this year.He said UKM was chosen for the collaboration with MACC as it was a premier university which conducted a programme in Social Science and Humanities which not only focused on teaching but also in producing graduates with critical thinking, morals and good communication skills.

"This is not the first time the MACC has established cooperation with UKM as before this UKM had conducted a corruption perception study in Malaysia where the respondents were university students," he added. He hoped the programme would also produce knowledgeable and capable graduates with the skills to fight corruption which had become increasingly challenging due to its new dimension. -
