IS UMNO LEADERS SPLITTING INTO 2 DIVISION / NAMELY FOR AND AGAINST. INTERESTING???

Please enhance the Rakyat on the news that's being currently viralled in the social media that the UMNO leadership at its recent Supreme Council meeting has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for royal assent to dissolve Parliament to pave the way for the 15th general election.

But according to the same news report, a majority of Supreme Council members including Ismail Sabri and another party vice president voted against the move initiated by UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.  Since UMNO has so far not issued a denial on the report, it is logical to conclude that the UMNO leadership had indeed taken such a move and this is most depressing news to the nation and the Rakyat.

It once again shows the damage that politicians could do to satisfy their selfish agenda and that they are the least concerned about the ensuing political uncertainty and instability that could result from their actions.  If our Members of Parliament do care to pause for a moment and reflect on the oath of office they had taken as lawmakers, they certainly would realize how they have betrayed the trust and the mandate that the electorate had delivered.  As lawmakers, the least that the rakyat expect them to do is to act responsibly instead of creating instability that at the end of the day, the entire nation would have to pay a high price in terms of the social and economic costs.

Already, Malaysia is fast losing out our once enviable position as an attractive country for foreign investors to other Asean partners like Vietnam and Indonesia. These past three years that saw Malaysia having four prime ministers shows the political pandemic that we are in.

On another score, I am of the opinion that the Malaysian Parliament is currently loaded with many MPs who have overstayed and in this regard, parties to which they belong to should make a conscious commitment to replace them with fresh faces come to the next general election.  As for GE15, with the Covid-19 still very much threatening both lives and livelihoods, I urge the Prime Minister to reject any move by the UMNO leadership towards a snap general election.

I have full confidence that he would do so in the national interest.

THE PEOPLE DESERVE MORE COMMITTED ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES

With talk of the 15th general election expected to be held in the not too distant future, it is timely to remind political parties scrambling to field candidates not to give another chance to those who didn't perform during their current term.  As I go around, I have heard people telling me that there are many such non-performing Yang Berhormat , including those who don't even meet their constituents during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Yes, granted that it is not permissible for them to be physically present in their constituency in compliance with standard operating procedure, but it doesn't mean that they don't show up at all to see for themselves the needs of their constituents.  This can still be done by complying with the SOP.

I am beginning to wonder if the leadership of political parties has a system to monitor and gauge the performance of their Wakil Rakyat at all as even those whose performance is below par are again fielded as candidates previously.  In the same light, not all ministers perform well and those that don't should not remain the Cabinet.

I welcome the move by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who upon his appoinment in August introduced the 100-day report card on the performance of his felllow Cabinet Ministers.  I am sure that rakyat are waiting anxiously for the Prime Minster to announce the outcomes of the report card.

In this connection, I would like to mention here that I am indeed very impressed with the performance of the Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin since his recent appointment.  He has shown to be highly committed in carrying out his duties and responsibilities and being someone always on his toes in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

By comparison, there are so many other ministers in our bloated Cabinet for which the rakyat are curious to know what have they done to justify their fat salary, allowances and other perks?  They must buck up and show much greater commitment in line with the oath of office to which they were sworn in.

There is so much that needs to be done to make up for the damage which the pandemic has done instead of still indulging in toxic politicking and other non-beneficial matters.  The rakyat certainly deserve more committed Elected Representatives and let me also say that they will have no hesitation to reject the non-performing ones come the election.

‘Impartial probe needed to restore MACC integrity’

PETALING JAYA: The credibility of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has come into question and activists say only investigations by a neutral party will help to restore its image.

They said investigations should be conducted by the police and Bank Negara instead of the commission carrying out an internal inquiry.

Social activist Tan Sri Robert Phang said there are questions that the MACC needs to answer.

He told theSun that the commission will have to explain how millions in cash that was to be presented as evidence in a corruption case could go missing.

“It is an insult to the whole system that has been set up to fight corruption.”

Phang was commenting on the arrest of three MACC officers on suspicion of stealing a portion of US$6 million (RM25 million) that had been seized from Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation former director-general Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid.

The money was to have been presented as evidence in a corruption case against Hasanah but it was later revealed that a portion of the cash had been removed and replaced with a similar amount in counterfeit US currency.

Phang said the MACC would have to explain how this could have occurred at its headquarters.

“There are many questions that have to be answered. How could law enforcement officers replace real money with counterfeit ones? How did they get the counterfeit? Who helped them?”

Phang said the MACC would have to explain how officers whose duty is to fight corruption can engage in corrupt practices in the first place.

He said MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki must quickly come up with a strategy to prevent such incidents from recurring.

He said the MACC should also not wait too long to take the errant officers to court.

Phang also expressed concern that the MACC might decide to hold an in-house inquiry rather than an open investigation, saying that such a move would not sit well with the people.

“We should have a neutral body, like the police, conduct the investigations. It does not matter who is implicated as long as the truth is revealed.”

He said Bank Negara should also be involved in the investigations, given that counterfeit currency would hurt the economy.

Asia Strategy and Leadership Institute Centre for Public Policy Studies chairman Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam said a full explanation is essential to enable the MACC to regain public trust.

“The incident has certainly created a bad impression of the graft body, and the action of replacing real money with counterfeit notes must be condemned, given that it reduces public trust in the commission.”

Ramon said that if the MACC is serious about regaining public trust, it must show that action is being taken and that the officers involved must be charged in court.

He said the incident could also deter some people from coming forward to report corrupt practices for fear of being exposed by dishonest MACC officers.

Ramon said the incident has also given the people the impression that the authorities condone corruption and that they lack the will to act.

“One major concern is that it could discourage foreign investors from coming to Malaysia. If the graft busters themselves are involved in corrupt practices, how can they protect investors from unscrupulous people?

“The government must show that it will not tolerate any kind of corrupt practice by taking quick action against those involved.”

Give missing funds probe top priority - Robert Phang

Prominent social activist Tan Sri Robert Phang (pix) wants the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police to accord top priority to investigations into the millions in US dollars cash that were found missing last month while in the custody of the MACC.

The money was seized by the anti-graft agency in the course of investigations into the money laundering and criminal breach of trust case allegedly involving the former Director of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO), Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid.

She was later given a discharge not amounting to acquittal by the court.

The media reported that both the MACC and the police are conducting investigations into the missing funds and the three were expected to be charged under the MACC and Police Acts.

The police were also reported to be probing one of the three officers for illegal possession of drugs and firearms.

“Members of the public were shocked when this case was exposed in the media two weeks ago. I urge the MACC particularly to give its utmost priority on its investigations into this case as it is the most serious act of breach of public trust by MACC officers,“ Phang said in a statement today.

Phang pointed out that he could well understand the strong public reaction to this case of missing millions because they look at an entity like the MACC as the last bastion of hope in the fight against corruption which is fast becoming another pandemic in the nation.

He also called on the MACC to exercise due diligence and transparency in its internal investigation involving its own officers, as well as without fear or favour.

“Once sufficient evidence is uncovered for a prima facie case, the MACC should charge the three officers without any delay,” he added.

Give Utmost Priority to Missing Funds Probe

Just over two weeks ago, members of the public were shocked by a news report exposed in the social media of the arrest of three officers of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with millions in US Dollars cash that were found missing while in the custody of the MACC.

The money was seized by the MACC in the course of investigations in the money laundering and criminal breach of trust case allegedly involving the former Director of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEI0) Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid.

She was later given a discharge not amounting to aquittal by the court.

The media reported that both the MACC and the police are conducting investigations into the missing funds and the three were expected to be charged under the MACC and police Acts.

The police were also reported to be probing one of the three officers for illegal possession of drugs and firearms.

I urge the MACC particularly to give its utmost priority on its investigations into this case as it is the most serious act of breach of public trust by MACC officers.

I can well understand the strong public reaction to this case because we all look at an entity like the MACC as out last bastion of hope in the fight against corruption which is fast becoming another pandemic in the nation.

I also call on the MACC and PDRM to exercise due diligence and transparency in this internal investigation, this time involving MACC officers, and once sufficient evidence is uncovered for a prima facie case, please charge the three (3) officers with legal action without fear or favor.

‘Huge budget a breeding ground for corruption’

RM400 billion allocation on mega projects untimely as people still suffering from Covid-19 pandemic: Activist

PETALING JAYA: Prominent social activist Tan Sri Robert Phang (pix) has warned of the effects of further worsening the level of corruption in the country with the massive budget allocated for the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob last week unveiled the five-year Plan in the Dewan Rakyat that will cost RM400 billion, the largest ever to be implemented.

“It is my deep concern that with hundreds of billions to be spent on huge projects it will become fertile breeding grounds for corruption in the country. In fact, corruption in Malaysia can be considered another emerging pandemic,” said Phang.

The chairman of the Social Care Foundation said the 12MP budget was huge by any standard and “everyone is asking whether, under the current circumstances, can we afford it?”.

This was in light of Malysia’s already ballooning and seemingly uncontrollable foreign debts.

“In this regard, I would urge the government to do away with undertaking prestigious projects or procurements to bring the expenditures to a more manageable level. The country and the rakyat are much better off without such costly projects.

“Covid-19 has made the country and the rakyat so much poorer. In this regard, I call on the government to spend prudently because it is obvious that the nation can no longer afford to spend beyond its means,” said Phang.

He added that it did not help ensure public and investor confidence when the prime minister also revealed in Parliament last week that the PM’s official residence, Seri Perdana, was undergoing renovations to the tune of RM38 million.

According to the prime minister, the renovations were necessary to “ensure safety as well as to preserve the country’s image during visits by key dignitaries”.

Phang said it was not only the timing of such extravagance that was highly questionable but more so the amount when millions among the rakyat were suffering with tens of thousands having lost their income amid massive business closures.

“I fully agree with former minister Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, that the nation’s image rests with the occupants of Seri Perdana and not the RM38 million renovations. And that it’s a complete waste of public funds,” he added.

MALAYSIA’S NEW GOVERNMENT – SHOW YOUR PERFORMANCE

PRESS STATEMENT BY:-

JUSTICE OF THE PEACE.
CHAIRMAN – SOCIAL CARE FOUNDATION

MALAYSIA’S NEW GOVERNMENT – SHOW YOUR PERFORMANCE

As Malaysia is slowly but surely moving from the pandemic to the endemic stage, God willing, in our battle against the Covid-19 crisis, the Rakyat look forward to the return of normalcy in yet another pandemic the nation is facing - political.

The recent signing of the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both sides of the political divide is certainly reassuring in cooling down the heated temperatures overhanging the political landscape for much of the period when the country is sparing no effort and expense in flattening the curve on the pandemic.

Politicians, of all people, should look at themselves in the mirror to take stock of the self-inflicting damage they have done in terms of undermining the country's political stability and future per se.  Never in our history since Merdeka 64 years ago have we seen such political turmoils that led to Malaysia having four prime ministers in the past three years.

The big question now is for how long could this unprecedented MoU last? Certainly, it the hope of the Rakyat that there will continue to be political peace and stability without which all our efforts not only to contain the pandemic by saving lives and livehoods would be futile.

Covid-19 has made the country and the Rakyat so much poorer. In this regard, I call on the Government to spend prudently because it is obvious that the nation can no longer afford to spend beyond its means.

The Prime Minister has just unveiled the five-year 12th Malaysia Plan that will cost a total of RM400 billion to implement. It's a huge budget by any standard and everyone is asking whether, under the current circumstances, we could really afford it.

This is in the light of Malaysia's already ballooning and seemingly uncontrollable foreign debts. In this connection, I would also urge the Government to do away with undertaking  prestigious projects or procurements to bring the expenditures to a more manageable level.  The country is much better off actually without such costly projects.

It is also my deep concern that with hundreds of billion to be spent on huge projects, it will be fertile breeding grounds for corruption in the country. In fact, corruption can be considered another emerging pandemic.

And it doesn't help at all when the prime minister announced in Parliament this week that Seri Perdana, the PM's Official Residence, is undergoing renovations to the tune of RM30 million!  According the prime minister, this is necessary to " ensure safety as well as to preserve the country's image during visits by key dignitaries". What kind of logic is this?

It's not only the timing of such extravagance that is highly questionable but more so the amount when millions among the rakyat are suffering with tens of thousands having lost their income amidst the massive closure of businesses.

I fully agree with former minister Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz that the nation's image rests with Seri  Perdana's occupants and not the RM30 million renovations. And that it's a complete waste of public funds.

Press Statement by Tan Sri Datuk Robert Phang Miow Sin

Lawmakers should go all-out to help needy: Activist

KUALA LUMPUR: All members of Parliament (MP) should “hit the ground running” to help the huge number of their constituents whose livelihoods have been badly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, said a prominent social activist.

“The situation on the ground is really bad, particularly for those who can barely afford to make ends meet or put food on the table, with loss of jobs and income due to the pandemic,” Social Care Foundation chairman Tan Sri Robert Phang told theSun.

“We have over 200 MP and if they pool their resources, there’s a lot that can be done and it will make a positive impact. Stop all politicking and bickering that have done a lot of damage, resulting in political instability and uncertainty in the country.”

Phang said the foundation was doing its best to reach out to the needy with donations, including a recent aid of RM200,000 to the National Heart Institute for the purchase of equipment.

The social activist said he supported the recent change in leadership in the country, cooling down the political temperature so that the nation could move on without undue distractions.

“I also appeal to new Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to set his priorities right, which is to focus on putting the country back on track.

“The people know we are going into very challenging times ahead as the pandemic is far from over and the premier must show his leadership.”

Phang said although the Cabinet that will be sworn-in comprised mainly old faces from the previous one, Ismail Sabri was right in instructing them to prove their achievements within the first 100 days.

Ismail Sabri had said the new Cabinet would adopt a more transparent approach by upholding the aspirations of his Malaysian Family policy.

The Nation must appreciate and give their fullest support to Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, YB Datuk Ismail Sabri and YB Khairy Jamaluddin for their tenacity in leading the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia.  Kudos to these daring men with their selfless acts of coming out to the ground to help the Rakyat regardless of their own safety and wellbeing.

If I may be so bold to ask, where are all the other elected politicians? Should you not be concerned about the well-being of the voters who placed their trust in you to take care of them by voting for you? Shame on you.

This Covid-19 pandemic virus does not seem to be slowing down but continues to bulldoze its way, effecting the young and old, the sick or healthy, rich or poor.  Many innocent lives have been lost to this ferocious pandemic.  The Government has initiated strict SOPs for Rakyat to follow, which must be adhered at all costs without fail as this will help contribute to flatten the curve.

Regardless of if you have already been vaccinated, these SOPs must continue to be a norm in our daily lives if we really care for ourselves and loved ones. There is no other alternative but to follow the SOPs.  Let us not lower our guard when the rate of infection seems to be receding, but we must remain constantly alert.

I am very sure the majority of us are God-fearing people, but God cannot help us if we do not help ourselves. FOLLOW THE GIVEN SOPs. Let us unite to help stop this virus from further spreading and claiming more lives. Our loved ones could be the next victim.

STAY HOME AND STAY SAFE.
