Michael Chia sentenced to jail, caning for cheating

Datuk Musa Aman was put in the spotlight two years ago following his alleged links with Michael Chia over corruption and money-laundering accusations. – February 27, 2014.
Businessman Michael Chia, who made headlines two years ago after he was caught with RM40 million in Hong Kong which he had claimed was for UMNO, was today sentenced to a year's jail and ordered caned for a RM2.5 million attempted cheating case 10 years ago.

The Star online reported that the Sandakan Sessions Court judge Elsie Primus, when delivering the sentence today, said that Chia was found guilty of attempted cheating in a deal over a timber operation.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Joyce Blasius.

The court, however, allowed an application by Chia's lawyer Rowiena Rashid to defer the sentence while he files an appeal at the High Court, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said in a statement today.

Chia was charged with attempting to cheat Dato' Agus Hassan of Syarikat Pelumas Sdn Bhd on June 2004 into believing that there were three requirements that were needed for the approval for a timber operation at the Kalabakan Forest Reserve in Sabah.

The three alleged requirements included RM3 million to a political fund belonging to Umno sabah and a RM25 per cubic metre commission for each metre of timber produced by Syarikat Pelumas Sdn Bhd at the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve.

Chia had earned notoriety two years ago when he was linked to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Musa Aman over corruption and money-laundering allegations in a case involving Sabah timber.

Musa’s alleged link with Chia first exploded in the media following an article in the whistleblower site Sarawak Report, which claimed he was caught trying to leave the Hong Kong International Airport with RM40 million in Singapore currency.

At the time, Chia had allegedly told the authorities that the money was meant for Musa, kicking off a probe on a series of funds transfers from Malaysia to Hong Kong that was then believed to be the possible laundering of money generated from illegal logging activities in Sabah.

Subsequently, the de facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said Musa’s name was cleared after Malaysian and Hong Kong anti-graft authorities found that the money was a “political donation” to Sabah Umno and was not meant for Musa’s personal use. - February 26, 2014.

Anti-graft task force finds RM20 million in police officer’s bank accounts

Reproduced from The Malaysian Insider for your concern. Please take note. Very Alarming!!!!

The six-month graft probe into 60 policemen believed to be involved in corruption and money laundering has made a shocking discovery – one senior officer had amassed RM20 million in several bank accounts, a senior Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officer told The Malaysian Insider that the senior police officer could not account for the staggering amount in his possession.

"Investigations are still going on. There will be more exposes in the weeks to come," said the source.

The source said it could not be ruled out that there are more cops who had illegally amassed moveable and immovable assets worth millions of ringgit.

"The investigators were shocked to discover the massive amount from this senior cop, but we believe there is more to come," he said.

The 60 cops, the biggest number being investigated by the MACC simultaneously in recent times, are mostly high-ranking officers based nationwide.

‘Better to field Tee Keat’

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 20, 2014): Social Care Foundation founder and chairman Tan Sri Robert Phang suggested that MCA field Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat for the Kajang state by-election as the Chinese community still holds the former party president in high regard.

He said the top leaders do not have the guts to set the stage for a battle between two party bosses, China Press reported today.

Phang said since MCA top leaders are afraid to contest against Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, who is tipped to contest the seat, is not exactly popular, only Ong can put up a good fight with Anwar.

He said the by-election is also the best opportunity for deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong to gauge what the Chinese think of his contribution during his tenure as deputy education minister as Kajang is where Chinese education movement Dong Jiao Zong's headquarters is located.

He said he had publicly suggested that Wee should contest the by-election but the latter had been mum about it.

"If Wee is fielded, I will pray for him and lend my support. But if he dares not contest, Ong should be the best choice," said Phang.

BN should avoid contesting in Kajang | Free Malaysia Today

Najib and his Umno election team messed up and destroyed BN’s chances of winning Selangor in GE13.

They screwed up the allocation of seats nationwide to his BN partners, the MCA, MIC and Gerakan.

In Selangor in particular, Najib andhis political bigwigs made the greatest damage to BN by giving away 12 of the 22 Parliamentary seats to MCA and MIC,leaving the remaining 10 to Umno.

The Chinese and Indian politicians and their members, despite being offered everything by Najib that they asked for could not deliver.

As such, the state seats within Selangor became a foregone conclusion. MCA and MIC should be
asked to wake up.

It is astonishing to learn that the Kajang by-election was a result Lee Chin Cheh’s resignation after having won the seat  for just eight (8) months. His move paved the way for Anwar Ibrahim to contest there.

Everyone knows that Anwar is a national level leader and his ultimate goal is Putrajaya. Hence, it is rather confusing that he has decided take part in this by-election.

KAJANG BY-ELECTION: Wee Ka Siong a potential candidate

IT is acknowledged that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will represent Pakatan in the Kajang by-election. As he is a leader of national level, it will be difficult for MCA to field a candidate to challenge him.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei has been speculated to be the contender for MCA in the by-election. As this constituency comes under the purview of MCA, it has to seriously find a potential candidate or State leader to contest the seat.

Who will be the most appropriate MCA leader?

From feedback gathered from Chinese communities, it is a choice between Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun and Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, the MCA deputy president and MP for Ayer Hitam.

On record, Lim Kit Siang had gone to Johor to challenge the former menteri besar of Johor and won. Also on record, former MCA president Datuk Lee San Choon had defeated the former DAP president Dr Dr Chen Man Hin in Negri Sembilan.

Therefore, the Chinese communities feel the most suitable candidate to participate in the coming by-election is none other than Wee. He is considered a heavyweight and national leader for MCA.

When he was with the government, Wee helped to rebuild the Chinese primary school in Kajang. Surely but truly, he will stand a better chance to win over the residents of Kajang.

He has proven positively that he has contributed towards Chinese education.

All he needs to do is to secure more Chinese voters to support him plus pro-Umno Malay voters should give him the edge against Anwar.

Under these circumstances, Wee should offer himself to face Anwar's challenge.

If he does not come forward, it will be a great insult to MCA and Wee will only be known as a leader of "no action, but talk only".

This is a golden opportunity for Wee to prove that he is capable of leading the Chinese community. We hope he will not easily forsake it.

Ka Siong calon paling sesuai lawan Anwar?

KUALA LUMPUR 10 Feb. - Timbalan Presiden MCA, Datuk Dr. Wee Ka Siong seharusnya

‘Wee Ka Siong should take on Anwar’

PETALING JAYA: MCA Deputy President Wee Ka Siong should offer himself up as BN’s candidate for the Kajang state seat, as he is the “most suitable” leader to challenge Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim in the March 23 polls, social activist and philanthropist Robert Phang said.

“[Wee] is considered a heavy weight and national leader for MCA. When he was with the government, Wee had assisted to rebuild the Chinese Primary School in Kajang.

“Surely but truly, he will stand a better chance to win from the residents in Kajang,” the Social Care Foundation Chairman said in a statement today.

As Wee had proven his contributions towards Chinese education, Phang said the former deputy education minister only needed to secure more Chinese voters to support him.

Phang said that factor, coupled with the votebank of “Umno hardcore Malay”, would give Wee the upper hand over Anwar.

“Under these circumstances, Datuk Wee Ka Siong should offer himself to face Datuk Anwar Ibrahim’s challenge.

“If he does not come forward to this direction, it will be a great insult to MCA and Datuk Wee Ka Siong will only reflect as ‘no action but talk only leader’,” said Phang.
