LDP leaders must maintain sanity :Robert Phang

KOTA KINABALU - Outspoken social activist Tan Sri Robert Phang has fervently appealed to LDP leaders to maintain their sanity and exercise a greater wisdom in handling whatever differences they have with the Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership. He stressed that this is crucial towards avoiding unnecessary political instability in the State which could have a far-reaching impact on the State and its people.“I urge the LDP leaders to take into serious consideration that it is easy to ruin the current progress and prosperity that comes with stability but very difficult to repair and restore them when damage is done. Avoid creating your own pitfalls.

Remember do not gamble away the stability and welfare of the state as well as the country just because to achieve your own personal agenda. We must therefore defend and maintain the survival of our country. Let us not break what is intact.“I therefore appeal to all LDP leaders, please come back to sanity. Please be sensible and avoid regret later,” he appealed in a statement issued in Kuala Lumpur today.

Phang who is currently Chairman of Social Care Foundation cum a national exco member for the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) said he has a soft spot for LDP because he once played a very import role in the birth of LDP back in 1989.

“Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat (LDP founder cum former president) has in fact given me a letter of appreciation for my role and contribution to this. There are still three living witnesses to support this claim of mine. I do not wish to see LDP go to disarray perhaps resulted by one man’s stupidity and short short-sightedness and irresponsible action,” he said.

He was responding to the latest political development affecting Sabah, following LDP’s declaration through its deputy president, Datuk Chin Shu Pin that it could no longer work with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Musa Hj Aman.

Phang who is also currently a Commissioner of Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) also believed LDP’s declaration against Musa stemmed from the feud between the former LDP president cum former Chief Minister of Sabah, Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat over the Kudat Mazu statue issue.

“It is an open secret that Tan Sri Chong who was once a close friend of Datuk Seri Musa has now become an arch enemy of the latter following the Mazu statue issue,” he noted.

He also suspected that LDP leaders like Chin could be in cahoots with a certain ‘selfish interest groups’ in an ongoing scheme to undermine Musa’s leadership, both for their own political as well as selfish gains.

"A salient point to note, whatever to be made known to the Public, it is imperative for component parties to adhere to BN’s SOP and code of ethics. Since the LDP leaders have declared their faith in the Federal BN leadership, contrary to what they preached, why are they acting in such a reckless and irresponsible manner by surfacing problems which are within the BN component parties, which can be resolved in the spirit of BN manner. This is very unbecoming and misleading. I hope they realize this serious deviation or mistake."

Phang thus reiterated his appeal to the LDP leaders to conduct a deep soul searching and to avoid from being further exploited by these groups of people.

He however believed not all LDP leaders are shallow and could be easily manipulated citing the example of its deputy president, Datuk Peter Pang En Yin who has decided to quit the party to remain in BN and to continue to support Musa’s leadership.

He especially hoped the current LDP president Datuk VK Liew whom he regarded as a fair and sound-minded leader because of his professional background as a legal practitioner, could do the right thing to salvage the situation without any further delay.

After all, whatever the Rakyat need to know will normally base on the track record. In this respect, he also noted that due credits must be given to Musa for his diligent efforts and contribution towards making Sabah a better State, contrary to all the baseless allegations made by the opposition and his rivals.
