KUALA LUMPUR - The Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) is investigating 290 cases of commercial crime involving lawyers nationwide, CCID deputy director Noryah Md Anvar said Monday. The cases were related to fraud in the sale of land and houses, cheating, falsification of documents, land titles and affidavit as well as criminal breach of trust, she told reporters at Bukit Aman, here. She said that so far 35 lawyers had been arrested throughout the country for involvement in such crimes.
Ten of them were from Selangor, eight from Johor, four each from Kedah and Kuala Lumpur, three each from Perak and Negeri Sembilan, two from Melaka and one from Penang. "They are professionals but have taken advantage of the trust placed in them by their clients to cheat them."Most of the crimes involved falsification of documents such as land titles," she said. A 50-year-old lawyer was held Monday on suspicion of involvement in a land fraud case involving RM15 million, she said.

"The lawyer was arrested at home in Sunway at 8am on suspicion of having been involved in a land fraud case in Kuala Lumpur," she said.Asked about investigation into a land deal in Bukit Jambul, Penang, allegedly linked to a lawyer suspect in the Banting murders, Noryah said she would keep the media informed when there were developments.

The Banting murders refer to the deaths of cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya, 47, her driver Kamaruddin Shamsudin, 44, lawyer Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim, 32, and CIMB Bank officer Noorhisham Mohammad, 38, who went missing on Aug 30 after having gone to Banting, Selangor, over a deal apparently linked to the Bukit Jambul land believed to be valued at RM29 million. Police found out that the four had been killed, their bodies burnt and the ashes thrown into rivers in the vicinity of Ladang Gadong near Banting, and picked up eight suspects, among them two lawyers.
