AG’s Chambers to host open seminar on sedition


KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — The Attorney-General’s (AG) Chambers is holding an open seminar to discuss the law on sedition and its usefulness in societies, according to Bernama Online.The seminar titled “Efficacy of the Sedition Act 1948”  intends to give the public a better understanding of the law, therefore there will be greater awareness to balance the right to express and the harms that may be present in speech.
The seminar will deal with seditious content in print media and also the Internet, which will make it appealing especially to bloggers to attend, according to a statement released by the AG chambers.It stated that sometimes satire and parody ends up defaming individuals.

The speakers slated are AG chambers’ own prosecutor Datuk Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah and UiTM legal professor Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi.Joining them will be deputy head of the civil division in the AG’S chambers, S. Amarjeet Singh, Media Prima chairman and newspaper columnist, Datuk Johan Jaaffar, and executive director of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Mustaffa Fazil Mohd Abdan.Some prominent bloggers are expected to attend and present their views at the seminar.It will be held on September 26 and 27 at Dewan Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Yusof, Level 3, AG’s Chambers in Precinct 4, Putrajaya.
