'Create special fund for welfare of scribes'

A SPECIAL fund should be set up to protect journalists in the course of duty. This, according to Social Care Foundation chairman Tan Sri Robert Phang, is vital in ensuring they are provided for if something untoward happens to them in the line of duty.Phang was speaking to the media present at the house of the late Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, a Bernama TV cameraman who was shot dead while on a humanitarian mission in Somalia.Phang had earlier donated a sum of RM 50,000 to Noramfaizul's family."It is sad enough to lose a loved one, and more so if it happens during the Raya festivities. Most people choose to stay back home during festive seasons. But here was a man who went on a humanitarian mission instead," Phang said.

Earlier, former Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's department, Datuk T. Murugiah, visited Noramfaizul's family in Taman Serdang Raya.Murugiah, representing the Malaysian Tamil Schools Development Foundation , said he personally knew Noramfaizul during his tenure in the PM's Department."I met him several times when he came over to do news coverage there."Murugiah also handed contributions to Noramfaizul's family.
