MACC must do better

EMOTIONS are strong and passions are high in the ongoing Teoh Beng Hock inquest. While the truth of the matter is that the cause of the political aide’s death must be established, the fact is that many people have already made up their minds as to how the 30-year-old ended at the bottom of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after a marathon interrogation session by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).The battered image of the MACC continues to take a beating as a purported "suicide note" is revealed a year after his death – although the investigations are done by the police.

While one can feel sorry for the graft busters, the continued bumbling by the agency in its handling of the case does not augur well in regaining the people’s trust. The conduct of its prosecution officer while trading barbs with the famed Thai pathologist does not help in improving its image. If the MACC is serious in portraying itself as a professional outfit then it is paramount that it gets the best people to represent the commission. There should be no room for the public, the Selangor Government and Teoh’s family to question the quality and proficiency of its officers as any public display of incompetence or questionable expertise will only confirm fears that the commission has a long way to go in regaining the public’s trust and confidence.
