Statement by Tan Sri Robert Phang

ALL Malaysians must unite to support the government against Indonesian demonstrators who attacked our embassy in Jakarta on Monday.Irrespective of race or religion, the actions of the Indonesians cannot be tolerated any Malaysia. We must respond without hesitation to defend our country’s image, integrity and sovereignity. The attack on our embassy is a direct threat to our sovereignity. As citizens, we must respond positively to defend our government and country. On Monday, the Benteng Demokrasi Rakyat (Bendera) demonstrators threw faeces into the compound of the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta.
They also stomped on the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian national flag) and smeared it with faeces. They have not only hurt relations between Malaysia and Indonesia. They are jeopardising the two countries’ good relations forged over the years. The Indonesian government must act swiftly against the demonstrators to show it does not condone such emotional and unacceptable behaviour against a friendly neighbour. The Indonesian government must take firm action against the demonstrators to ensure regional peace and stability remain intact.
