Robert Phang Got Punk’d?

by Dajmarizal Zolkipli
Malaysia has become a nation where rumors, lies and false allegations by those who intentionally spread misinformation on innocent victims in order to silence or discredit them are taken as the truth. Meanwhile, the real truths, which can be substantiated, are ignored or covered up so that the deceptions appear credible.

The Tan Sri Robert Phang’s bribe allegation would be the most recent and credible, if not a perfect, example to support the above statement. The allegation raised by one blogger suddenly made headlines all over the media, leaving Robert Phang looking pretty much like a deer in the spotlight. But Phang did not make much fuss, neither did he fret about it. Instead, he calmly invites investigations to be conducted on him, a move that’s pivotal in getting the rakyat to take his side.

With one single allegation leveled against him, Phang withdrew himself from MACC’s Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel. In a move that the man himself claims as to preserve his integrity and that of the anti-graft body, Phang pointed out that he is a victim of a concerted attack aimed at intimidating him by rogues from within and outside the government. Perhaps Phang have a point there where many people believe this is the effects of Phang’s actions toward his concerns about public perceptions on a host of issues.

During his tenure as the MACC panel, Phang had constantly raised concerns regarding the lack of action in the MAS scandal. He was consistently demanding for Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail to be probed for graft, saying that Abdul Gani’s explanations to the panel had failed to dispel suspicions that he was “consorting” with Shahidan Shafie, an alleged proxy for former MAS executive chairman Tan Sri Tajuddin Ramli. The call for a clean investigation on the MAS scandal was followed by his demand to have MCA Youth chief, Datuk Wee Ka Siong be call for investigation over PKFZ scandal. This was the move which has been speculated to be the reason for the counter-allegation being made against Phang.

Claiming that Wee is an ‘important and useful witness’, Phang urged Wee to help the investigation of the scandal in the nation’s biggest ever project. Of course Wee was uncomfortable with this proposed arrangement. The allegation against Phang was raised after the High Court dismissed Wee’s application for an interim injunction to gag Phang from making statements tying Wee to the PKFZ scandal.

For skeptics, the Robert Phang saga is rather easy to digest. Someone has been ‘submerged’ after emerging with something big on big figures. It all began when Phang started to constantly question the lack of action in the MAS scandal and A-G Abdul Gani’s haj trip with Shahidan. Then came his urgent calls for an investigation to be conducted on Wee and the resignation came soon after. The whole sequence of events can be easily tipped-off as pre-orchestrated maneuver. Who will yield the most out of what had happened is still anybody’s guess, but the writer can only sense that something is not right and those involved in the alleged wrongdoings have a lot of explaining to do.
