Double Happiness speeches by Tan Sri Robert Phang’s son & daughter.

Recently, I celebrated my 75th Birthday celebration together with my daughter’s graduation as Medical Doctor, themed  “DOUBLE HAPPINESS”  with close friends and relatives on 31st of May 2014. My youngest son spoke on behalf of my family to welcome the distinguished guests and friends. I now release my son’s and daughter, Dr. Phang’s speech. Thank you. God Bless.

Benjamin Phang’s Speech

Ladies and Gentlemen, Tunku Aziz, Tan Sris, Puan Sris, Datuks, Datins and fellow friends.

It is without a doubt, my absolute delight to welcome all of you to tonight’s joyous occasion, my
father’s 75th Birthday.

5 years ago, today, you would have seen me on the stage, cracking jokes after jokes. However today, that will not be the case, as I feel that we have something much more distinguished to celebrate.

Those of you who were present for my father’s 70th Birthday would have seen the brilliant slideshow put together, highlighting the significant moments in his life which has made him the man he is today.

I won’t be going through it in much detail, although I do feel the need to reiterate certain points more extensively.

My father did not have the most privileged of childhoods. Shortly after birth, his father passed
away, leaving his mother to care for him and his two sisters.

Times were tough and his mother struggled to make ends meet, he still lacked the financial means of receiving an education and sometimes even basic nutrition and healthcare.

Despite the hardship and circumstances placed upon him from birth, it did not deter his will to
have a good life and to be able to provide unconditionally for his loved ones.

In fact, the experiences that he was subjected to, has cultivated in him a sense of unparalleled generosity and compassion for the less fortunate, which I am sure is how most of you have come to know him today.

My father has definitely provided my siblings and I, a fortunate life. However, rising above the
occasion, is my sister, Frances.

At a tender age, she was off living by herself in a foreign country and despite my father not being around all the time to give her moral support of advice, she found her own way and excelled in her chose fiend.

And just earlier this month, she graduated from the University of Nebraska Lind with the title MD.

My sister is the pride and embodiment of what the Phang family stands for today and is testimony of my father’s years of providing. Words alone cannot describe the elation we feel for her.

Tonight’s theme is Double Happiness, apart from celebrating my father’s milestone of making it through the third quarter of life, we would also like to celebrate my sister achieving her life-long dream of becoming a Doctor.

Ladies and Gentlemen, without further ado, my sister, Dr. Frances Phang MD.

Dr.Frances Phang’s speech

Hello all distinguished guests, relatives, family and friends—thank you for joining us on this special occasion. As Ben mentioned earlier, I recently fulfilled my childhood dream of becoming a doctor. I will be specializing in General Surgery with an eventual focus on breast oncology.

With the addition of “M.D.” behind my name comes additional responsibilities, one of them is the saying “Do no harm”, so in accordance with that—I will keep my speech nice and short so that you may continue to enjoy your dinner.

There are two things that I’d like to address in my speech. First of all, my excitement about officially entering the medical profession.

Every birthday wish since I could remember was to become a doctor, and now that it has materialized—I can share it freely with everyone.

The last four years of medical school was tough, tougher than I’d ever imagined but it was also the best four years. I was involved in something I loved—I saw patients in clinic, diagnosed them and subsequently applied what I learned, therefor reinforcing my knowledge.

I had excellent doctors as teachers, imparting to me their own nuances in practicing medicine. And along the way, I made great friends—friends that will be around for decades to come.

Looking back, it has truly been the best four years and I have so much more to look forward to—starting residency and learning how to practice independently as a budding surgeon.

Of course, none of this would’ve been possible without the influence of my father. He has served as such an important role model to me.

As you all are well aware, giving back to the needy is something my father is very passionate about.

It will be such an honor and privilege to give back to our society through the means of medicine. I only hope that I will be able to accomplish a fraction of what my father has done throughout my career.

You’re truly an inspiration, Pa—let’s give him a hand.

Secondly, I’d like to give thanks to my father for his love and support throughout the years. He has supported me wholeheartedly every step of my education. He told me that as long as I wanted to further my studies, he will provide.

My father provided so well that all I had to do was focus on studying and nothing else—not many of my classmates can say the same. I am truly a very blessed child to have him as my father.

With that said, I’d like to give a toast to my father. You have provided for and taken such good care of me and I will work hard to continue your legacy in social work as a doctor.
Thank you, Pa and Happy Birthday.

The Declaration of Geneva—

How to deal with militants in Sabah

PETALING JAYA: Former MACC adviser Robert Phang has proposed the revival of the colonial-era “new village” system to isolate suspected foreign militants in Sabah from the general population.

In a statement lamenting the recent rash of abductions in the state, he said he was suggesting the “British-tested tactic” because the militants and their sympathisers “all look like Sabahans”, making it difficult for the authorities to identify them.

He said the exercise would need strong support from the locals and urged the MPs and state assemblymen in the affected areas to lead in planning and putting the isolation scheme into effect.

Phang, who chairs the Social Care Foundation and sits in the executive council of the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation, resigned from the MACC advisory panel in January 2011 following events subsequent to his insistence that Attorney-General Gani Patail be investigated for graft.

His statement on the Sabah abductions called for a structural reform of the Eastern Sabah Security Commission (Esscom) and expressed incredulity over official statements that no ransom had been paid to secure the release of kidnap victims.

He urged the authorities to stop negotiating with kidnappers and paying ransom to them, saying he feared that kidnapping was becoming a “lucrative business”.

“No ransom paid is the official stand of the PM,” he said.  “But it was contradicted by the families of the victims.

“It’s difficult to believe that there was no ransom paid to the kidnappers. Simple logic: if no ransom paid, there will be no release of hostages. The kidnappers would not risk their lives to do it for free.

“Every time ransom is paid and hostages are released, a new kidnapping takes place. This goes to show it has become a lucrative business.”

He also expressed concern that the “so-called negotiator” between the militants and the authorities would become “a permanent negotiator because of this lucrative business”.

Tan Sri Robert Phang calls for reform of ESSCOM

KOTA KINABALU, June 19, 2014: Outspoken social-and-anti-crime activist Tan Sri Robert Phang has called for structural reform of the Eastern Sabah Security Commission (ESSCOM), in order to make it more effective for the very purpose that it was established for – to prevent security breach in the east cost of Sabah.

Expressing deep regret over the latest kidnapping incident in the east coast of Sabah, the fourth since the establishment of ESSCOM within the short span of seven months, Phang said this clearly showed that ESSCOM has failed to function efficiently.

He said this inevitably raised the question of the actual purpose of having ESSCOM, whether it was merely to score political mileage rather than to boost security in the east coast of Sabah, to prevent intrusion by militants from the Philippines.

“Strange enough to note, that the Director General of ESSCOM is not seconded from PDRM or the military.

“In short, he does not have the actual personals or troops under his command.  It is a very worrying point.  I appeal to the Government to seriously explore and look into the actual structure of ESSCOM to avoid being called a “lame duck” by the Rakyat.  If the DG of ESSCOM does not perform as expected – change the leadership.  This process has to take place without further delay,” he stressed.

Phang who is Chairman of Social Care Foundation cum an Exco of Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) also called on the authorities concerned to stop negotiating with and paying ransom to the kidnappers, so as not to encourage and turn kidnapping into a lucrative business as what has happened.

Change ESSCom Structure, Leadership - Robert Phang

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- The Social Care Foundation has appealed to the government to make changes in the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) structure as it had allegedly failed to meet its desired function.

In a statement today, foundation chairman Tan Sri Robert Phang said the government should explore ESSCom's actual structure and its achievements to prevent it from being referred to as "lame duck" by the public.

Since ESSCom was formed, he said it had not been able to function efficiently, adding that it was strange the ESSCom director-general (Datuk Mohammad Mentek) was not seconded from the police or the military.

Phang, who is also Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) executive council member, urged the goverment to change the ESSCom leadership, as well.

Mohammad, 49, a former Sabah immigration director was appointed to lead ESSCom, starting April 1, last year.

Robert Phang calls for restructuring of Esscom

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Social care foundation chairman Tan Sri Robert Phang has called for the restructuring of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom).

He questioned the purpose of Esscom’s establishment, asking if it was merely for political mileage than having an actual function.

“Esscom director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek was not seconded from the police or the military. He does not have the actual personnel or troops under his command,” he said.

“I appeal to the government to seriously look into the actual structure of Esscom to avoid it being called a ‘lame duck’ and to always report incidents with transparency.”

Phang said that during his recent visit to Sabah, many residents had approached him and voiced their concerns over personal safety because they felt they had no support from the authorities.

“They are worried about their safety, yet nothing is being done about it. You can see it in their faces,” he said.

“They want to form a ‘vigilante corps’, but require the guidance and support from the authorities, including the state assemblymen.”

He suggested that a new registry system be implemented for Sabah to distinguish foreigners from the local people.

KIDNAPPING CASES IN SABAH – SITUATION IS VERY SERIOUS CHANGE THE ESSCOM STRUCTURE – “LAME DUCK”

19th June 2014.
PRESS STATEMENT BY:- TAN SRI DATUK ROBERT PHANG MIOW SIN
JUSTICE OF PEACE.
CHAIRMAN – SOCIAL CARE FOUNDATION

Of late – few kidnapping cases, one after one took place in Sabah Coastal Area – from Sempornia to Kunak.

1. It is difficult to believe, that there was NO RANSOM PAID to these militants/kidnappers.

2. Simple logic augurs well – if no ransom paid – there will be no release of hostages. Reason being so, the militants/kidnappers would not risk their lives to do it for FREE.

3. Every time ransom is paid – hostages released – a new kidnapping takes place. This goes to show it has became a lucrative business trend for the militants/kidnappers.

4. My concern is the so called “NEGOTIATOR” in between the parties – militants/kidnappers and authorities would turn out to be a permanent negotiator because of this lucrative business. This is almost the same pattern by the Somalia pirates.

5. My suggestion is all the Sabahans living near the coastal line – must be vigilant and view the current situation as very serious and life threatening. They MUST FORM THEIR VIGILANTE CORPS - always be in preparedness and support authorities to fight them. Pass on whatever information to the relevant authorities.

Secular State

A secular state is a concept of secularism, whereby a state or country purports to be officially neutral in matters of religion, supporting neither religion nor irreligion.[1]

A secular state also claims to treat all its citizens equally regardless of religion, and claims to avoid preferential treatment for a citizen from a particular religion/nonreligion over other religions/nonreligion.

Secular states do not have a state religion (established religion) or equivalent, although the absence of a state religion does not necessarily mean that a state is fully secular; however, a true secular state should steadfastly maintain national governance without influence from religious factions; i.e. Separation of church and state.[2]
