MACC Brings 547 Cases to Court Since 2008

KUALA LUMPUR,  8 DECEMBER, 2010: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had taken 547 cases to court between 2008 and September this year, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz.In the same period, the prosecution won 69 per cent of the cases heard and lost 31 per cent, he added in his written reply to Wee Choo Keong (Independent-Wangsa Maju) in the Dewan Rakyat today.
At the appeal stage, Nazri said the percentages of cases won and lost were also 69 per cent and 31 per cent respectively.On Wee's question on the status of the investigation into the case involving Hasbie Satar, the former political secretary of former Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, Nazri said the investigation had been completed and the papers were being studied by the Deputy Public Prosecutor.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein in his written reply to Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam), said 846,501 foreign workers had entered Malaysia between January and August this year.  
He said out of the number, the majority (417,773) were from Indonesia, while 164,575 were from Nepal and 102,849 from Myanmar.Liang had asked on the number of foreign workers who had entered this country from 2005 to 2010 and the action taken by the ministry against employment agencies for delays in taking away the workers from the airports or not fetching them at all.

Hishammuddin said based on statistics from the Immigration Department, there were 1,815,238 foreign workers in this country in 2005, 1,869,209 in 2006, 2,044,805 in 2007, 2,062,596 in 2008 and 1,918,146 in 2009.He said if the employment agencies failed to take away the foreign workers who had arrived at the airports, they could be blacklisted and banned from bringing in anymore foreign workers into the country.
